Location: Leeds
Time commitment: 8th of December - 9am to 3pm
What we're looking for
We need enthusiastic volunteers to help support at our Walk for Children Leeds event in the event village and along the route. The event aims to bring together friends, family and furry companions for a fun, festive day at Roundhay Park. Participants will choose between a 3k or 5k route, and will be aiming to raise vital funds for the NSPCC. That's why we need your help to give them an incredible day and show them how grateful we are for their support.
What you'll do
You'll be joining other enthusiastic volunteers at our NSPCC event village and marshal points along the route. You could help out with registration, merchandise or festive crafts in the event village, or take on the role of a route marshal, cheerer, start line motivator or finish line celebrator along the route. There's something for everyone on the day – so we'll try our best to put you in a role that best works for you.
What you'll get
Volunteering at our events is a great way to experience the incredible atmosphere of an event day, and can also be a great way to meet other local volunteers. We'll provide you with an NSPCC t-shirt for you to wear on the day, and any cheer materials or equipment you might need – so all you have to bring is your enthusiasm!
You'll be accompanied by NSPCC staff to support you and answer any questions you may have. Light refreshments will be provided for you during the event, and travel expenses will be covered up to the value of £5.00.
Who's right for the role?
You don't need any prior experience, just a sense of fun, team spirit and enthusiasm. It's important that you're able to spend a few hours outside in the likely cold weather, as the event will be taking place in December. You'll also need to stand for a few hours so, if you think this would be difficult, we'd advise bringing along a travel chair. If you are a wheelchair user, please let us know and we can help to identify a suitably accessible role for you.
You'll need to feel comfortable if members of the public ask you about your volunteering role and will simply need to direct them to a member of staff if they have any questions about the NSPCC. We need volunteers with a warm and friendly manner, as the NSPCC is 90 per cent funded by public donations so the impression people have of us is incredibly important.
Please be aware that you'll need to make your own way to and from the event (we will give you directions).
As an organisation, we are committed to creating and fostering a culture that promotes safeguarding and the welfare of all children and adults at risk. Our safer recruitment practices support this by ensuring that there is a consistent and thorough process of obtaining, collating, analysing and evaluating information from and about candidates to ensure that all persons appointed are suitable to work with our children and adults.
At the NSPCC we are on a journey to becoming a trauma-informed organisation for the children, young people and families that we work with, as well as our staff and volunteers. To be trauma-informed is one of the guiding principles that shape and guide our 2021-2031 Strategy. This means understanding the nature of adversity, trauma, and resilience so that we can work towards reducing and preventing further harm and promoting recovery and healing. Coming to work at the NSPCC will provide the opportunity for you to join us in our commitment to becoming a trauma-informed organisation.
