My NSPCC story

As a retired senior education administrator, I have always had a natural ability to connect with young people. So when I retired, I decided to put my skills to good use and volunteer for the NSPCC Young Witness Service. The training is intensive, but I am eager to learn. I shadowed experienced volunteers until I was ready to go out alone, and that's when my journey truly began.

I love my time volunteering with the NSPCC Young Witness Service. It is a fulfilling experience that allows me to help young people who are in stressful and trying situations. I get to know the court system and processes and meet other volunteers from right across the area. It is a bit like an apprenticeship, and I feel like I am constantly learning and growing.

As someone who has spent their life working with young people, I find that my skills are perfectly suited for the NSPCC Young Witness Service. I have developed the ability to remain calm and collected in stressful situations, and I know how to engage with young people and their parents or carers.

“I feel like I am making a real difference in the lives of the young people I am helping.”

Another factor I can offer is flexibility - with being a retiree, I can be available any day of the week that I’m needed. This is quite fitting for the Young Witness Service as court cases can be scheduled on different days of the week.

Working with the NSPCC Young Witness Service has been an incredibly fulfilling experience for me. It has given me the opportunity to use my skills and knowledge to make a real difference in the lives of young people who are going through a tough time. I am proud to be a part of this amazing team, and I hope to continue making a positive impact for as long as I can.
