About us

How we live our values

Our values define how we work together. It explains how we’ll work with and for babies, children and young people, and those who support and enable our work. Our values help to remind us of what's important to all of us, and why.

But it’s not about writing good values and hanging them on walls or putting them as screen savers. Values only matter if they are present in everything we do. Behaviours bring our values to life, and that's why our behavioural framework
is so important.

Our values

Putting children first:

  • For more than 140 years we've put children first. We believe in children, we want what's best for them, and we exist to keep children safe.

Taking a stand:

  • We campaign, change laws when necessary, lead public debate and we're on the frontline, supporting those who work with children.
  • We will speak out when something is wrong and celebrate success with those who help things improve.
  • We'll take a stand individually and as an organisation to make sure children are at the heart of everything we do.

Working together:

  • We cannot prevent cruelty to children on our own. Luckily, we don't have to. Our passion inspires others, and our desire to listen, learn and improve means we work collaboratively with inspirational people, organisations and children. By living this value, our people can be active, authentic ambassadors for the NSPCC.

Striving for excellence:

  • We're authentic, always learning, developing and measuring what works.
  • We're brave enough to be sincere and share our knowledge with others.

Making an Impact:

  • Our work won't end until we've changed attitudes and transformed services for children to protect every child and prevent abuse.
  • We're brave in our actions and are prepared to be unpopular when necessary.
  • We'll inspire society to face uncomfortable truths when it helps us achieve our goal.

What our values mean to us

It’s easy to talk about values, but living them is where the real work begins. At the NSPCC, values aren’t just something we talk about, they’re something we live, together. They shape how we show up for each other, make decisions and stay accountable. Living these values takes commitment - It means being brave enough to challenge the status quo, open enough to learn from others and determined enough to keep improving.

Shaped by our staff, volunteers and young people

Our values based framework is shaped by our staff, volunteers and young people and applies equally to employees and volunteers of all roles, levels and length of service. It’s an essential source document for several core initiatives which drive our culture - including Values Based Interviews, the People Awards and performance management. This document helps to bring our values to life so we can have them at the centre of our work. You'll find a copy of our values based framework here.
